The story on this site is true, and happened to our weary travellers in December 2010 during their stay at the Riu Varadero, Cuba. Our intrepid travellers booked their Christmas holiday on the 10th November 2010, and at the time of booking were given no warning of the issues facing the Riu Varadero. It became clear later that the hotel was not built, and should have opened in May. Thomson holidays carried on selling the hotel as if it was open, opting to take customers' money without warning of possible problems. An email in late November alerted our luckless holidaymakers to the fact that the hotel was not finished, and they would not be getting the holiday they had booked, the one that looked fantastic in the brochure. Conversations with Thomson left them with the following advice: "Go on holiday and complain when you get back" This unwillingness to help them, or offer an alternate holiday, set the pattern of Thomson's behaviour for when they got home and complained. To date Thomson have offered a 20% refund after admitting that all the issues that were raised had been valid. The diary on your right is a brief outline of was was to become probably the worst holiday they had ever experienced.
